Saving your natural tooth also saves you time, money, and hassle. A dental crown can cover your damaged tooth and keep it safe for many more years. Dental crowns can also keep bacteria away from the damaged area of a tooth. When you have a crack or break in your tooth, food and bacteria can get into it to cause an infection. • Teeth Extractions

  Our goal is to keep your natural teeth healthy for as long as possible. We want to prevent damage, cavities, and infections. It’s almost always more convenient and less expensive to keep your natural teeth. But there are times when a tooth just has to come out. If you need an extraction, we will be there to make you feel comfortable and calm. We can perform all regular tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth extractions, right here at Pacific Northwest Smiles. WHY DO I NEED A TOOTH EXTRACTION? We can take care of tooth extractions for many of the common reasons, which include: Impacted Teeth: An impacted tooth is one that can’t grow in normally because it’s stuck behind a bone, another tooth, or your gums. Extracting this type of developing tooth can prevent more serious problems. Crowding: A tooth that is growing in can sometimes push on other teeth or even crack them. This is common with wisdom teeth. Extracting that one tooth can save a lot of other teeth. Accidents: During an accident, a tooth can get so damaged that it has no chance of functioning normally afterwards. If a crown or other restorative treatment can’t save it, it’s better to extract the tooth. Decay or Infection: If an infection or decay has advanced too far, we sometimes have to extract a tooth, so the problem can’t spread to other teeth. Also, the structure of that tooth might have become too damaged for the tooth to be functional. Because our primary goal is to save your natural teeth, we will only recommend an extraction if it will benefit your overall oral health. A ROOT CANAL CAN SAVE A TOOTH If you have a painful toothache, you might have a dental infection in the inner tissue of your tooth—the root canal. A root canal procedure may save the structure of your tooth, so you do not need an extraction. Some patients are scared of root canals, but they’re really just a fairly routine appointment. We can relieve intense tooth pain by cleaning out the infected tissue. Imagine having your toothache gone and still keeping your strong, healthy enamel! You could get back to eating normally and not have to worry about getting a replacement tooth. • TMJ / TMD Treatment

  Pain in the TMJ (the temporomandibular joint), in the back of the jawbone, can be terrible! This pain can spread into your face, neck, shoulders, and head. Tension can flow from this one joint. At Pacific Northwest Smiles, we can use mouthguards and other dental appliances to relieve that pain as quickly as possible. DO YOU HAVE TMD? You won’t know for sure if you have temporomandibular disorder (TMD) until you come in for an exam, but here are some common symptoms you can look for: A locked jaw. Painful chewing Pain in the shoulders, neck, and face that seems to have no other source. Migraines or other headaches. Ringing in your ears. A sore jaw. Clicking or popping sounds in your jaw. If you have any of these signs, call us. We can give you an exam and explain your treatment options. HOW CAN WE TREAT TMD? TMD can be caused by strain and fatigue in the muscles associated with the TMJ (the temporomandibular joint). Those muscles can tense up or spasm, causing many painful symptoms. We use mouth guards and other oral appliances to relieve some of that tension. These oral appliances relieve straining, so the muscles can begin to heal. Your TMJ muscles can be fatigued because of problems like: Arthritis. Poor posture. An uneven bite. Grinding of the teeth. An accident damaging the face. When you have suffered from TMJ, the facial muscles you use constantly need time to rest. A mouth guard or a similar oral appliance can: Keep your teeth from being able to grind together. • Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment

  “Apnea” is not a word we use in everyday life! What does it mean? An apnea is a pause in someone’s breathing of at least 10 seconds while he or she sleeps. If your breathing is stopping many times per night, it can interrupt your sleep without fully waking you up. That can make you much more tired than you should be. It can also reduce the crucial flow of oxygen that you need to stay healthy. Sleep apnea can also be related to louder snoring, which can interrupt your own sleep and disrupt your family members’ sleep. If your snoring has gotten louder recently or you are more fatigued during the day, we recommend that you find out if you have sleep apnea. Treating it can improve your sleep and your life! WHY MIGHT YOU HAVE SLEEP APNEA? One reason that some people have sleep apnea is because their tongue or upper throat tissue is pressing against the lower part of their throat. This blocks the airflow and can cause the touching tissues to vibrate, causing louder snoring. Why does this develop? You might be sleeping in a different position, which changes the shape of your jaw and tissues. Your body shape may have changed in general, or some other factor might be repositioning your jaw. HOW CAN WE TREAT SLEEP APNEA? Whatever the cause of your sleep apnea, it can rob you of energy all day long, give you headaches, make your irritable, and even make your memory worse. Of course, not getting enough oxygen during the night is dangerous— whether or not you are experiencing these other symptoms. To treat sleep apnea, we can create a customized oral appliance that will reposition your jaw. We’ll design it to open up your airway, reducing snoring and ensuring a good flow of oxygen.
